Worcester’s Fluid
Formula
Material | Amount | |
---|---|---|
Water | 900 | mL |
Mercuric chloride | 60 | g |
Strong formalin | 100 | mL |
Acetic acid, glacial | 110 | mL |
Description
This fixative is formal sublimate with glacial acetic acid added at a ratio of 1 part acid to 9 parts solution, and is similar to Stieve’s fixative (Stieve’s fluid contains more formalin and less acetic acid). It was recommended for fish eggs, for embryos and for general zoological use.
As it is derived from formal sublimate, the same precautions apply to its use as apply to the original fixative, which should be reviewed. The precautions are primarily based on the mercuric chloride content.
Safety Note
Prior to handling any chemical, consult the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for proper handling and safety precautions.
